I remixed the Xbox “Rare Achievement” sound effect into a song

Last week, Major Nelson released the “rare achievement sound effect” (the sound that triggers in an Xbox game when you unlock an achievement that 10% or less of players have unlocked). Upon hearing it, I noticed a layer of musicality. I chose to challenge myself to remix the rare achievement sound effect into a song using only the raw audio as a source. This meant no synths and no other samples.

Every instrument in my remix, called “A Rare Achievement”, is created using the rare achievement sound effect and a ton of effects. I used Ableton Live 9 and Native Instruments’ Kontakt sampler. I chopped the main achievement sound into little bits and found the parts that sounded the best to be drums (kick, snare, hats, crash, ride) and made a beat. Then I sampled a portion to be the “bass” instrument. From there I added different parts and tried to compose it like an electronic music track.

If you’d like to download it, you can do that here.

Royalty-Free “Benny Hill Theme” Style Alternative (Circus Minute)

I had been looking for a song in the style of the Benny Hill Theme (Yakety Sax). You know, that funny chase music. I wanted something with a funny vibe that would add humor to a video that had been sped up to look hectic and silly. Yeah, basically I wanted the Benny Hill Theme for the same reason that everybody else wants it. Continue reading

I can now announce that I’m creating music for a video game.

It’s been a couple of months since I was asked to contribute music for an upcoming video game. Many studio meetings and much prayer and contemplation, but we’re hitting a milestone and now I can actually share officially that I am making music for BeatBoxer by R2Wgames.

BeatBoxer is a mobile game, in the rhythm genre, where you fight different wacky characters to the music (provided my myself) and try to knock out these fools while banging my beats. The team behind the game is very small and spread out over quite a bit of geographic distance, but we seem to be working well together despite the divide.

We recently launched a Kickstarter for BeatBoxer and if funded, I should get paid in actual money! This is exciting to me because even though I have written several songs about video games, I have never written music to be officially included in a video game.

If you happen to be interested to learn more about BeatBoxer, you can visit the Studio’s site and the official Kickstarter below.

New Album with Guitar and Ukulele, Tropical Jazz

Tropical Jazz album art

Almost exactly a year ago I started recording some song ideas for an album that would showcase the ukulele that I received as a gift from my mother-in-law Suzan.  I had never played an ukulele before last Christmas, but she thought that I would be able to make some decent sounds with it since I’m fairly musically inclined.  This album wouldn’t have been possible without Suzan and her generous gift of the ukulele.

I thank my dad for the name “Tropical Jazz”.  Thank you to Brianna for pushing me to finish this album.  Thank you, Alayne, for always encouraging and being honest.  Thank you, Pam, for supporting my music these many years.

I wanted to give a quick word about each of the songs on the album. Continue reading
